VIDEO: Sailing Yacht A (ex White Pearl)'s First Sea Trials

Following the first images of 142.81m/482.28ft 'sailing yacht A' (ex White Pearl) on the water, new video footage captured at Nobiskrug’s ADM Kiel yard reveals even more about the design of the unique superyacht. The vessel will be the world's largest sailing yacht when completed in 2016.

Set to topple sailing vessels such as the 90m/295ft ATHENA and 88m/289ft 'Maltese Falcon' in the stakes for the title of 'world's largest sailing yacht,' Nobiskrug megayacht 'A' has captured the attention of the industry and press on behalf of her masts, the largest in the world - with a main mast measuring 300ft, so big it is rumoured to feature a small room and observation point in it.

Her composite masts have been carefully constructed over 3 years by English firm Magma Structures, who are the only company able to build masts of this size in the world. They were designed by Dutch Naval Architects Dykstra and will weigh around 50 tonnes, featuring wing-like rotation structures and fibre-optic sensors to ensure excellent performance at sea. Her superstructure is largely composed of steel.

The amenities on board are befitting of a yacht of this stature, including Touch-n-Go helipad, underwater glass 'observation pod' on the lower deck (believed to measure 193 sq. feet), a deck Jacuzzi, spa and elevator - proving she is likely to match the high standards of luxury of owner Andrey Melnichenko’s other vessel, the 119m/390ft motor yacht A. 'A' is a name her owner reportedly prefers so his yachts are at the top of order lists.

The hull of A was launched in May of this year, she is thought to have a build cost of approximately US$ 400 million. Powered by two MTU 3,600kW diesel engines and two 4,300kW electric motors, she can reach a maximum speed of 21 knots, with a cruising speed of 16 knots.

Styled by the esteemed Phillipe Starck, A will accommodate 20 guests and a crew of 54 on board.

It is not publicised if S/Y A will become available for charter, check back to YachtCharterFleet for all the latest news on the build.
