The Rise of the 80m+ Charter Yacht

If you want to enjoy the ultimate superyacht charter experience, one that encompasses everything from swimming pools and helipads, to discos and beach clubs, you will need a yacht big enough to accommodate them and this is something that’s driving the superyacht charter market.

Although the group of clients willing to spend in excess of $1 million per week on a yacht vacation is relatively small, there is a definite demand for charter yachts over 80m that meet the increasingly high standards of charter clients. The levels of luxury available on a yacht of this size are akin to that of the best luxury retreats in the world, offering exceptional levels of service and facilities as well as stunning interior settings – all at the private use of the client and their party.

The success of the 2014 Singapore Yacht Show highlighted the strength of the market and the expansion in areas such as Asia, which are fast becoming popular alternative charter destinations as well as promising prospects for the sales market. The strength of the sales market inevitably affects the charter industry and the motivation to build new superyachts in this size range.

In the past couple of years there have been several additions to the global charter fleet in the 80m+ range, including the 93.5m/306’7 KISMET II, the 88m/288.71’ QUATTROELLE and the 85.1m/279’2 SOLANDGE, all launched from Lürssen between 2013 and 2014. In an interview with our friends at Superyacht Times at the 2014 Singapore Yacht Show, Lürssen Yachts’ Michael Breman confirmed that in terms of sales the larger superyacht clients continue to come from Russia and the Middle East. He also announced plans to launch two other 80m+ projects later this year – a 92m/302’ Reymond Langton designed superyacht and a 105m/344’5 superyacht designed by Tim Heywood and Alberto Pinto.

I think there will always be a demand for these very big yachts and if you want great facilities like gymnasiums, cinemas and helicopter landing pads, then you need to charter something of this size.

In fact, the subject of larger superyacht new builds was a theme amongst professionals from all aspects of the industry at the show in Singapore this year. Jamie Edmiston of Edmiston Company noted that there are comparatively few superyachts over 80m that are available on the global charter fleet: ‘As more large yachts are built, it’s inevitable that some will come onto the charter market…..I think there will always be a demand for these very big yachts and if you want great facilities like gymnasiums, cinemas and helicopter landing pads, then you need to charter something of this size.’

From brokers to builders, the industry as a whole seems keen to move further into the 80m and over superyachts. This is certainly a positive reflection of the current yachting industry which continues to strengthen and even expand in new areas such as Asia. This is in addition to charter clients becoming more informed about what different charter yachts can offer which creates competition in the industry to build bigger and better.
